Cadillac Repair: Brake lights, lt blue, lh side

Question
The brake lights will not turn off, brakes applied or not, car turn on or off, lights will not shut off.
1996 Deville

Answer
Hi Perry, If there was anything worked on the car and then this problem came up like a rear taillight bulb was replaced then I would suggest that the bulb is checked to make sure it has 2 filaments inside instead of 1. Otherwise recheck the other work to make sure a wire wasn't pinched or something wasn't assembled incorrectly.

Another possability is the brake switch above the brake pedal shorted out or it misadjusted and needs to get adjusted or replaced. You will need to remove the panel below the dash on the LH side and useing a light look at the brake swich which is located above the brake pedal on a bracket and disconnect the 2 wire connecter with the orange and Lt blue wires. Then the brake lights should go out. If not there is a capacitor that might be shorted and allowing current threw it and need to get replaced. If the center plunger is sticking out too far then you could try turning the switch in after the wires and rubber hose if there is one are disconnected to push the plunger further into the switch body. Plug the connector in and if the lights turn off and on then as they are supposed to you could leave it for now or replace the switch.

If those suggestions don't help then something weird is going on and you would need to take it to your mechanic so he could trace the circuits useing a wiring diagram to find the problem. Let me know if you need more help. Bill
