what is the timing chain mark for a  1998 nissan maxima 3.0

The timing chain marks are on each cam as well as the crank.  You need to line these up with the dots on the chain.  Buy a Nissan chain as it makes life much easier for setting things up.  After you get all three to line up, turn the engine over clock-wise twice and make sure they still line up.  Get a complete kit to make sure the guides are good as well as the seals and tensioner.

A Haynes manual will show a diagram.  About $20 bucks.  If not, the library is free.  Make a copy so you know what the dots look like along with the alignment marks.  If you have not tore yours down yet rotate it to top dead center, pull the cover and take pictures.
