Cadillac Repair: 1999 Deville with Northstar Cooling system pressurized when cold and overheats, coolant tank, coolant system

Question
I have had this car then 2 months, driven it less than 900 miles.

Drove the car less than one mile to work, engine temp is at 125 degrees. Opened the hood, upper radiator is full looking.  Turned the radiator cap and the system is pressurized.

Smelled the air/gas/? Coming from the coolant tank, its very foamy does not smell like gas or exhaust. The coolant coming out is overflow is cold.

This is a remanufactured northstar long block, installed less than 10K miles ago.

================================================

Following checks have been performed.

1) Replaced the oil (warning indicated that it was cooked)
2) Replaced thermostat
3) Replaced water pump
4) Flushed the block, drained the radiator twice.
5) Dex coolant and tablets into the lower hose.

Tests Performed

Leak Down test.
Radiator and all lines were filled.
Used 100 - 125 PSi shop pressure to all cylinders one at a time. Nothing, no bubbles or anything.

Hydrocarbon test from 175 to 205 degrees, negative

Coolant system tested @ 18 psi for 5+ hours, did not leak down with the plugs out.  Then cranked the engine, no fluids came out.

Hoses not clogged, water easily passes as well as compressed air, no blockages found.

======================================================

Engine does not stumble, power through out the power curve.

It over heats, but then again it could be caused by another problem.

Answer
If your sure that you have no head gaskets problems and the engine temp normally runs at 220 degrees when fully warmed up. I would have to go with a restriction in the radiator.

Just because you can see the coolant flow in the radiator all your seeing is the upper vanes that are passing coolant. you cannot see what the middle and lower vanes are doing.

From your posting I would put a new radiator init. Do NOT have the old one cleaned or rodded. I have seen to many that were supposedly cleaned still cause problems until a new radiator was installed.
