Question -
I have owned a 1986 cadillac seville since it was new and the instrument cluster went totally black yesterday.  I located a company that will repair it for $149 if I send it to them.  Can you help me with a plan to remove and replace the necessary parts to make the needed repairs. Thanks so much.
Answer -
You CAN'T replace the microprocessors and miniature voltage regulators on the electronic board.

The board must be replaced and then the cluster tested via machine.

Send it out for repair.

I hope your POSITIVE in your diagnosis that the fault is IN the cluster and not in the BCM or ECM ?.

Thank you for your comments, I have no idea about the BCM or ECM nothing has been tested by any electronic equipment. All I know is the cluster went black and I was afraid if I took it into a cadillac dealer for repair it would cost more then the car has value.  The same thing happened when I had about 8000 miles on the car but cadillac repaired it under warranty at that time.  I now have 192000 but it still looks and runs like a new one. I guess I will be at the mercy of the local dealer.  The reason I asked my original question is a result of finding a company on the internet that repairs instrument clusters at a favorable price.  Your thought are appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer
The ONLY place that repairs these clusters is AC DELCO of whom is the manufacturer of the cluster and I have tried for years to try and obtain an electrical schematic in order to make the test procedures and repairs myself since I do repair alot of electronic components, But AC DELCO would NOT release a schematic to me.

If you are mechanically inclined and know how to use a volt/Ohm meter I can provide you with the diagnostic information to test the entire system so you will be sure that your problem IS in the cluster BEFORE you send it out for repair.
