Cadillac Repair: overheating and engine, cadillac devile, radiator cap

Question
I have a 1998 cadillac devile which was overheating.  I carried it to the dealer who said nothing was wrong.  Next time it got hot, he said thermostate and radiator cap. Next time he said blown headgasket.  My car is still torn down at the dealers.  They now say it needs a new engine because the pistons or sleeves are out of tolerance by .003 thousands of an inch.  Does the piston tolerance have anything to do with the overheating.  It was running good before just getting hot.  If I put it back together without putting a new engine it, what kind of results can I expect.

Answer
I have heard a LOT of lousy stories in my career, But this ranks up near the top of the lousiest ones I have heard to date.

I believe there diagnosis translates into not knowing what the problem really is and are GUESSING. What will be the next story if it still does the same thing when they put in a new engine only to find out that the problem may only be with the radiator.

I would have NEVER let them tear it down this far without getting a SECOND or THIRD opinion.

Because now your in a mess with an engine torn apart. I am not saying that they are WRONG, But I have my doubts on their diagnosis.
