Cadillac Repair: 82 cadi eldorado brakes, emergency brake lever, rear caliper

Question
hey i am also a professional mechanic but i am stumped and dont want to replace unneeded parts. the brake pedel goes to the floor when pressed but  the car stops. i already replaced the master cylinder & brake booster & bleed the brakes with 3 qts of fluid. the fluid comes out cleen with no bubbles. ive looked at all the lines for leaks & there are none. ive checked the rear calipers and they are ajusted in all the way. the only thing i can notice is the rear pads are wearing un evenly. but there is very minimal gap on the front and rear pads

Answer
I know this problem real well. This has been a NIGHTMARE with the rear calipers since the day they built this STUPID system.

There is a very long 3 hour measuring and adjusting procedure that was supposed to resolve the problem but only ever gave you about 1" more of pedal.

If you look at the rear emergency brake lever that mounts on the inside of the caliper where the emergency brake cable attaches there is a square notch punched out of the lever where it mounts to the caliper.

They made new levers that instead of a square knock out they made a diamond pattern knockout that gave you more adjustment positions to install the levers of which raised the brake pedal to about a 2" increase.

You either need to obtain these new levers or grind down the brake pads enough so you can get the old levers to mount correctly so as to give you more pedal.

You will NEVER get a FULL SOLID pedal with this brake system. If you get HALF a peddle you are doing excellent.

I have done many many of these brake systems and have never seen anyone get a full or 3/4 solid pedal. It is the way they designed the stupid system and no matter what you do, The brake pedal will ALWAYS be very low but it will stop the vehicle.

Since I retired they may have come out with a different type of rear caliper but this I am not sure of, So you might want to check with your local parts store.
