Cadillac Repair: 93 Caddy Eldorado ignition, alchohal, lock cylinder

Question
Sometimes my car will start, but sometimes it say that "car may not restart", "anti-theft problem","wait 3 minutes". Now I was told it could be my key, or the ignition switch. Please let me know what you know b4 I send it to the shop where they will tell me anything. Thank You Very Much

Answer
Hi Vernon, The first thing to do is to try the other key or use a lite duty cleaner on the key such as denatured alchohal or peroxide to try and clean the pellet. If that doesn't work then you will need to take it to the shop and have the ignition lock cylinder tested with the key inserted and turned to the start position several times to make sure that the wires are ok. If the circuit does go open they can install a 1/4 watt resistor that is close to the key reading in the wires comming from the lock cyl. after cutting them. Then any key that turns the cylinder will start the engine. Otherwise it will require dissassembleing the steering column to install a new lock cylinder and make 2 new keys. Sometimes there is a relay for the starter circuit that goes bad but won't give the wait 3 minuits message. Sounds like you will need to get your car to a shop you trust and let them test and fix the problem. Bill
