Cadillac Repair: 97 deville passenger rear window wont go back up, 10mm socket, spring clip

Question
How do I remove the switches?  I pounded on the door to no avail and removed the boot and checked the wiring.  It doesn't appear kinked at all.  Are the switches expensive. or hard to replace?

Thanks,

Tony

I put the rear passenger window down yesterday and it wont go back up.  It is pretty cold here in Wisconsin and I am wondering what could be wrong.

Hi Tony, Check to make sure that the child lock for the windows isn't on. Then try both switches because mabe one switch is not working. Make a fist and give a couple good raps on the door panel while holding the switch in the up position. If it moves great and that means there is a bad contact in the motor and the motor needs to get replaced. Then it comes down to the wiring inside the black rubber door boot. After opening the doors a number of times the wires can flex in 2. If everything is good so far then remove the window swich from each door and hod it in one direction and see if power is going through the switch. Check both switches. Then the door panel will need to be removed and the motor tested. Make sure you remove a couple of screws and then the panel lifts up. DO NOT use a door panel tool to pry the panel of because you will break the clips and then getting them fixed or panel replacement will be BIG $$$. Maybe you might be able to get a copy of the procedure from the Caddy dealer. The good thing is once the panel is off the motor can be changed very easily with a 10mm socket. Hope that helps. Bill

Answer
Hi Tony, Not sure about the switch prices but they may be available only from the Caddy dealer in which case I would call them for a price. The way they come off is at one end you should see a small slot to intall a flatblade pocket screwdriver under the switch bezel and above the door panel and afterpushing against a spring clip the end of the switch will pop up. Then you can take your voltmeter or 12volt test light and check the wires for power through the switch as the switch is moved in both directions. At this point I would say you are going to find a bad motor. Bill
