Cadillac Repair: 95 Cadillac Deville fan motor, digital voltmeter, cadillac deville

Question
I have a 95 Cadillac Deville with 95k miles and while I was driving the other day, the heater/ac fan just quit working. I tried several different settings and nothing worked. Then, I started to smell as though something was on fire. Not only was I cold from the freezing temps outside, I was now worried my car was going to suddenly catch on fire. Am I correct to assume my fan motor needs replacing. If so, how hard is it to change and is there any special tricks that you may be able to inform me before I tackle this project.
Thank you,

Answer
Hi Randy, You're right there is a good chance that the blower motor is bad. What I would do is unplug the motor  and use a digital voltmeter to make sure that there is battery voltage available at the connector. If so then the motor needs to get replaced. On the plastic cover there are 2 cut marks at the 10 and 2 positions and then the rubber can be folded back to expose a screw for the top cover. If you have the Northstar then removeing the coil pack will be necessary and the 4.9 might be able to sneak it out. If you are mechanically inclined and have metric tools then this should be ok except the screw at the bottom of the motor can be a stinker to get to. Make sure when you put everything back together that the sparkplug wires are at least 2" from the motor so it can't get zapped by stray sparks. Hope that helps. Bill
