Cadillac Repair: setting the timing, 1993 cadillac fleetwood, cadillac fleetwood

Question
how do I set the timing on my car....it's a 1993 cadillac fleetwood brougham..fully loaded, 5.7 litre engine. Is there a computer or ignition bypass switch?

Answer
Hi Ann, It depends. If you have the vin P engine, 8th digit from the left in the vin number, then the timing isn't adjustable. If it is a vin 7 then this is what you do.
Hook up the timing light to the #1 sparkplug wire and warm the engine until the thermostat opens. Then ground the IC bypass wire which is a single wire that is alongside the throttlebody on the RH side. This puts it into base timing mode and the spec is 0 degrees BTDC. The a/c and all acessories need to be off. Then unhook the ground wire and the timing should go up. If it does then shut the car off and unhook the battery for at least 30 seconds to clear the code. If the timing doesn't change doublecheck that you have a good ground to that wire terminal and recheck the timing again. To adjust the timing there is a bolt to loosen at the bottom of the distributor, 9/16", and then the distributor is moved til the mark is on 0 and then the bolt is tightened up. Hope that helps. Bill
