Cadillac Repair: 1992 Deville Air conditioner, ebay motors, 134a freon

Question
The compressor has went bad on my Deville. I have a friend who is a GM Parts manager who can get me the parts at his cost to convert over to R134. Is there a repair manual you would recommend? I have a Haynes but it doesn't go into the greatest detail. If I change the compressor, dryer, orfice and take it to a repair shop to add R134 will I damage the compressor. What about adding oil to the compressor. Am I in to deep to try this at home?

Thank you,

Rick

Answer
Hi Rick, When the compressor goes bad that is a good time to change over to the 134A freon because the new compressor usually isn't shipped with any oil in it. You will need to get the correct oil because R12 and R134A oil isn't compatable. As far as manuals go a factory Cadillac shop manual is the best and can be gotten reasonable at ebay.com in the ebay motors section under manuals or amazon.com which is a liile more money. If you ment a change over manual you might stop by the Auto Zone because they have a kit with all the fittings, oil and instructions to do the job. Don't worry about damaging the new compressor because once you put oil in it you will still have to clear the codes in  the computor before the compressor will turn on unless you jumper the compressor to make it work and the shop will need to add the correct amount of freon after everything is back together. Doing all the changeover work yourself once the freon has been evacuated should be a job you can do in the driveway provided you have metric tools and have done some repairs before. I'm sure your buddy can bend the ear of the a/c tech or email me if you have more questions. Bill
