Cadillac Repair: 1992 Cadillac STS AC keeps blowing fuse, cadillac sts, voltage spikes

Question
Last weekend I made a 2 1/2 hour trip and the AC worked perfect. When I got back in the car later that day, it only blew warm air. A mechanic told me it had a freon leak and since I was out of town, decided to wait to get it fixed until I came home. When I took it to our mechanic, he said it was just a fuse. He put a new one in, we picked it up, and it worked great....until we killed the car and once it was re-started....it didn't work again. Since then, I've had my husband put a new fuse in whenever I am going to be driving any distance. What could cause this fuse to keep blowing? Is there a simple (and inexpensive!!!) cure for this? Could the sensors have anything to do with this problem?   By the way...we had the compressor replaced last summer.  Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Martha, Anything that is powered by the fuse is a possable cause of the fuse blowing. You could have a wire somewhere that has rubbed through the insolation and intermittantly the bare wire touches metal and the fuse blows. The compressor clutch could be useing too many amps to stay engaged or as it heats up it is drawing too many amps. There is also a diode in the power wire for the clutch that prevents voltage spikes back into the module when the compressor engages and it could be bad. Unfortunately there isn't a quick fix for this and to cure the problem sounds like your mechanic will need to do more testing or find a more Caddy knowledgable tech. Bill
