Cadillac Repair: vehicle stalls, fuel pump relay, plastic connector

Question
Sorry Bill, the motor is a 4.9L and not a 4.6L as stated in the previous question. Also, it may be a coincidence, but I learned that this problem stated occuring after a no-name brand of gasoline was used. Once and one time only. What would be your advice pertaining to a 4.9L ?

Thanks, Paul

Bill, I have a 95 Sedan DeVille, 4.6 motor, 110K miles. In the past week, for no apparent reason the vehicle stalls intermittently at moderate to high speed, 30-70 mph. I Coast to the side of the road, place it in Park and start the vehicle up again. It could stall again in a few minutes or not stall again with repeated use for the rest of the day. My concern is that it now seems to happen more frequently. There are no symptoms prior to stalling and no symptoms during restart. Do you have any advice ?

Thanks,
Puzzled

Hi Paul, Cadillac has had problems with the crankshaft sensors and replaceing both of them might be all that is necessary. Of course if there are any codes then that might help to isolate the problem. Also hooking up a scan tool to see if a sensor is out of range and checking fuel pressure should also be done. Hope that helps. Bill

Answer
Hi Paul, First check for codes. If none are present then you will need to find out if you are loosing fuel or spark when the engine dies. If it is spark then it could be a problem with the 2 piece wireing harness inside the distributor. For some reason inside the plastic connector the power wire goes open causing the engine to quit. Otherwise a bad fuel pump relay might need replacing. Bill
