Cadillac Repair: 89 Cadillac Sedan DeVille Heater Problem, heater hoses, cadillac sedan deville

Question
The heater heats intermittently, but never really gets heats like it used to.  It doesn't get very warm--just a little, even with the temp gage set at 90 degrees.  The heater hoses are hot.  I have not replaced anything yet.  Not sure exactly what the problem is.  Someone said it could be the Programmer located behind the glove box, but I have no clue what the Programmer is.  Can you help?  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Steve, The programmer motor on your car could have stripped gears if it hasn't been replaced. To get to it remove the  screws that hold the glovebox in place and then look straight back and you will see a black plastic box with a 5" threaded rod on the top. Move the temp to 90 and after it stops moving grasp the rod litely and punch up 60 on the display. Alow the rod to move but feel if there is a skip or the rod stops moving halfway through its travel. Then go to 90 and do the same thing. Try this several times. If the motor is bad you used to be able to replace just the motor or the best thing would be to replace the programmer and it will come with a motor. The other possability is the heater core is plugged or restricted and flushing it out with a garden hose both ways might help. Hope that helps. Bill
