Cadillac Repair: Trouble Cranking After Running Over 30 Minutes, cadillac eldorado, solinoid

Question
I have a 1990 Cadillac Eldorado, with 120000 miles. When I have be running the engine for more that 30 minutes, if I turn it off, I have to wait at least an hour or more before it will crank. There are no error codes, and there is no indication of overheating. I checked the battery voltage in the command center and it shows 12.5 volts or less sometimes.

What is the problem, where should I take the car, and what should I expect to pay to correct the problem?

Answer
Hi Ervin, If that is the original starter on the car it most likely is going bad. What is happening is as the solinoid heats up it can't move or binds up and after it cools off it returns to normal operation. Eventually however the solinoid will fail to start even cold. I would take it to a shop that displays the blue ASE gear symbol or a Caddy dealer for diagnosis. They will probably charge 1 hour labor to diagnos and 1.5 hours to replace the starter plus about $150-$250 depending on what brand starter they install. Bill
