Cadillac Repair: ignition, turn signal switch, steering column lock

Question
My ignition is stuck in the on postion ie..will not go back. How do I I pull the ignition or what should I do. 1973 Pontiac Grandville same as the El Dorado

Answer
Hi Philip, Hopefully the engine isn't running so then you can disconnect the battery. you might want to lower the column and unbolt the ignition switch and see if things move freely now. If not then you will need to remove the steering wheel with a special puller after removing the horn pad. Then there might be a steering column lock plate that needs to be removed with a special tool. Turn signal switch is next. And then the screw holding the lock cylinder and then the cylinder. At that point you might be able to tell if the column needs to be disassembled further to change the rack and linkage or if the lock cylinder is defective. The easiest thing would be to just replace the steering column with a used one from the junk yard if the switch and lock cylinder are good and it might turn out to be the cheapest repair depending on who does the work.
