Cadillac Repair: cadillac front end, torque specifications, auto parts stores

Question
1985 cad devile 136m miles
There was a lond bang in the front end as I was driving. Then a noise started as I turned the wheel as if something was grinding and the steering was difficult as the car wanted to pull to the passenger side(same as the noise side).
The driver side strut and spring and mounting plate were replaced a month ago. I think it is the same problem. What are the steps to doing this myself.

Answer
Hi Joe, There are too many steps and torque specifications that you will need to get a repair manual and read through it. I will caution you to get a quality spring compressor. Stay away from the china, japan, tiawan crap that is available at the flee markets. Moog would be ok and auto parts stores have loaner tools sometimes. The strut spring is very strong and if the spring compressor should break or slip off the spring due to a poor quality spring compressor or if you just undo the top nut from the strut without useing one you could be seriously hurt or killed. This might be a job best taken to a shop based on safety factors. Besides you will need to have the alignment checked afterwards and the car will be at the shop already. But after reading the manual you can deside if this is something you want to do yourself or not. Bill
