Cadillac Repair: Fuel Gauge, fuel tank sending unit, cadillac deville

Question
My fuel gauge in my 1995 cadillac deville is reading full all the time, even when it's not full of gas. I want to know if disconnecting the battery will reset the computer and correct the issue or is there something wrong with the gauge?

Answer
Hi H Murray, If You disconnected the battery then you would have to relearn the PCM computor for driving and the gas gage will still read full. Cadillac had problems with the resistor board inside the fuel tank sending unit where the gage would drop to E somewhere in its travel and then come back to reading normal a little while later. Make sure the fuse for the gages are good. Your problem might be with a shorted wire to the gage or bad gage but the way to test this is to disconnect the connector under the car by the gas tank. The needle should go to E. Then by grounding the wire it should go to F. If it doesn't respond then the gage is at fault or the wire has gone open. Sounds like something for the shop to look at.Until then frequent fill-ups or around the 200-250 mile range would be advisable. Bill
