Cadillac Repair: head gaskets, oil filler cap, engine oil cooler

Question
I have a '92 caddy with 52,000 miles. I keep having to add anti-freeze, not much maybe a gallon over a months time. I can't see were it's leaking from. Someone told me it mite be the head gasket. Any guesses?

Answer
Hi, Yes it could be a head gasket but the more likely place is the intake manifold gasket. Check the engine oil level for being overfilled and remove the oil filler cap and turn it over. Is there a tan thick substance on it. Then you need to replace the intake manifold gasket asap and change the engine oil and filter. Flushing out the engine oil cooler would also be a good idea. If the leak were from a bad head gasket then the coolant temperature usually takes some cold-hot-normal-hot swings with-in a 30 minuit span and the hot light should turn on.You should take it to the shop and have the cooling system pressurized to rule out any external leaks. Hope that helps. Bill
