Cadillac Repair: oil pan removal, cadillac coupe deville, 1988 cadillac coupe deville

Question
I have a 1988 Cadillac Coupe DeVille and I need to remove my oil pan in order to put on the gasket and I cannot seem to be able to remove the oil pan at all. There is a metal hose connected with a rubber hose that is preventing me from completely removing the oil pan.  Can you please advise me on how to go about doing this correctly?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Weylin, Those pipes and hose are coolant pipes, and useing a prybar carefully move them forward towards the frame. Then remove the flywheel inspection covers and you will have access to all the bolts and 2 nuts. Remove them all and break the seal of the pan to block so the pan hangs down and look at the end of the pan to see if it looks like it has been ground down. If not then take a 10mm wrench and loosen the 2 oil pump bolts 1/2" and place a screwdriver between the pump and block and pry down on the pump. If you loosened it up enough then the pan should have enough room to slide out. If you didn't loosen the pump you risk cracking it and the pump will have to be replaced. In some extreme cases I have have to raise up the engine in order for the pan to have clearance to come out. Then grind off metal on the 2 innermost bolts until there is onlt 1/8"-1/4" remaining between the bolthole and the end of the pan. Then the pan can slide up in place with the oil pump bolted in place. Also remember to replace the oil pump o-ring. Hope that helps. Bill
