1990 Caddy Deville with Fleetwood package. Put new rear brakes and rear air leveling shocks on car and tried to bleed air. Pedel seems to go down with pressure. Anti lock light comes on after driving several miles. Does it hurt anything to drive it with the anti lock light on or can I pull a fuse and  eliminate the anti lock mechanism?

Thanks.

Hi Ron, How did the car drive before the repairs were done? Was the light on and pedal go down when applying the brakes? Are you sure that all the air is out of the rear wheel cylinders and the brake shoes are real close to the drums without dragging? Maybe you forgot to plug in a rear wheel speed sensor or cut a wire. Those sensors were known to go bad and have an updated part. I will have to check on the brake system for your car but if you have the Teves brake system then you might only have 20 or so brake pedal pushes before the brakes won't work. Get back to me and I will research the abs issue in the meantime. Bill

Bill: Thanks for the quick reply. The rear brake drums were bad so we replaced them. The pedel would go down with pressure. It  seem to stay up now, but there may be some air still there. Could air bubbles make the anti lock light go on after driving a few miles? Would it hurt to drive with the anti lock light on>|?

Thanks

Ron

Answer
Hi Ron, I double checked and with your brake system you might only have 20 to 25 pedal pushes until the assist is gone and it turns to manual brakes. I would highly recommend that you get it to the shop asap and have it checked out to find out why the light is turning on. As far as the bleeding, they are finding that braking performance is better with fluid that has been flushed out every 2-3 years so if you bleed the brakes until clear fluid comes out then that should take care of your low pedal. You might also want to bleed the fronts as they might have some air in them too. Bill
