Question
QUESTION: Hi Tom this is Sean again. the guy quoated the lifters at 2300 and said the noise may not go away. He said the motor looed good when he pulled the valve covers off. He said that we could go north or south with this project. So he quoated us 3500 for a used motor and 5000 for a new motor. My parents dont want to do any of this. What happens if I get seafoam new oil and filter and I drive it. I know seafoam is a gamble and is only a band aid. The guuy also told me we could drive the car and let the motor go on its own. Then we could start shopping for a new or used motor. When he says let the motor go what does that mean and what will happen. Also how much damage could it do to the rest of the car. Thanks.

ANSWER: HI SEAN,,,DOING NOTHING WILL DO NO MORE HARM TO THE CAR. THE ENGINE IS THE PROBLEM. I WOULD THINK THAT IF THIS ENGINE HAS GOOD OIL PRESSURE AND THE LOWER END OF THIS ENGINE IS NOT MAKING ANY NOISE. I WOULD TRY LIFTERS AND A VALVE JOB.. SEAFOAM WILL NOT HELP YOUR ENGINE AT THIS POINT..IF YOU WANT TO PUT SEAFOAM IN THIS WITH A NEW OIL AND FILTER CHANGE THAT WOULD BE OK AS WELL. THE NOISE WILL STILL BE THERE AND SOONER OR LATER THE LIFTER OR LIFTERS THAT ARE MAKING NOISE WILL GET WORSE IN TIME CAUSING MORE DAMAGE TO THE ROCKER ARMS OR CAMSHAFT..THIS IS WHAT HE MEANT BY GOING SOUTH..HOWEVER WITH THAT BEING SAID THIS COULD LAST YOU A LONG TIME LIKE THIS AS LONG AS NO ONE BEATS THIS TO DEATH AND ALWAYS KEEPS A EYE ON THE [[[OIL LEVEL]]]. GOOD LUCK TO YOU,,,TOM

QUESTION: How often should I change the oil and also thanks for the info. I know you warned me about a longer pushrod if he puts one in will the car last a little longer or will it shorten it. He is looking out for us greatly and we have been through this before with my dads 1993 Chevy Silverado k1500 they dissembles the motor found out the heads were fine but the block had cracked and they tried sealing it but we wasted all the money and time so we had to pay for that and also the new motor. 5 years later and the truck still does not run and the guy still has it. I don't think we will get 2-3 months out of the camaro motor but I am curious. I know you said it will tear the camshaft up. The guy really does not want to do the valves because he thinks we would waste our money and time doing it. I heard to run thicker oil. It runs on 10w-30 right now what is the next motor oil that I should go to. Thanks. By the way the motor will come out in may or July. We don't have the finance to do it right now. I wish we could but we will have to wait. Thanks.

Answer
HE SEAN, I WOULD CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 300O MILES OR 3 MONTHS. IF HE WERE TO USE LONGER PUSH ROD
THERE IS NO WAY OF TELLING WHAT OR HOW LONG THIS WOULD LAST LIKE THIS. YOU COULD TRY IT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS..AT THIS POINT THERE IS REALLY NO GAIN OR DISADVANTAGE.. I WOULD SAY HOWEVER IF THE TICKING NOISE IS NOT THAT LOUD LIVE WITH IT, AND JUST KEEP UP ON OIL CHANGES AND OIL LEVELS.
I DO NOT FEEL THAT THIS ENGINE WOULD HAVE A CRACKED BLOCK FROM LOW ON OIL. THIS IS USUALLY FROM OVERHEATING...THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I DO NOT KNOW WHY HE IS NOT IN FAVOR OF A CAMSHAFT LIFTERS AND VALVE JOB UNLESS HE HEARS SOMETHING DOWN LOWER IN THE ENGINE..IF SO,,,>>> I AGREE WITH HIM..AS FAR AS OIL WEIGHT 10-30 OR 10-40 IS GOOD..TO HEAVY OF OIL AND YOU WILL STARVE THE UPPER HALF OF THE ENGINE,THIS IS NOT GOOD..HEAVY OIL IS GOOD FOR A ENGINES THAT IS BURNING A LOT OF OIL..GOOD LUCK TO YOU SEAN,,,TOM
