Question
I have changed the alternator, ignition coil, spark plugs and wires. Originaly my truck died on my way home it just shut off, i didnt know it shut off until i tried turning and giving it gas to get around the turn. so i got it home and got the alternator and batery and got them checked. alternator was bad so i got a new one. it ran for a couple days then the ignition coil went bad so i changed it. then i got the same symptons so i figured it had to do with the ignition so i took the number 1 plug wire off and didnt get any spark when i turned it over. what is my next step?

Answer
HI JEREMIAH, THE MOST COMMON FAILURE OF THIS STYLE GM IGN SYSTEM IS EITHER THE PICK-UP COIL MOUNTED AROUND THE SHAFT OF THE DIST UNDER THE ROTOR AND NEXT TO IGN MODULE..THE BOOK WILL TELL YOU HOW TO REPLACE THE PICK-UP COIL ON THESE V6'S BUT WE NEVER HAVE ANY LUCK WITH OUT BREAKING THEM. WE USUALLY HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE DIST !!!  I WILL ASSUME YOU CHECKED THE ROTOR TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT BURNED THROUGH THE BOTTOM GROUNDING OUT ON THE DIST SHAFT..ALSO IAM SURE YOU LOOKED AT THE DIST-CAP MAKING SURE THE COIL TOWER IS IN GOOD SHAPE AS WELL ??? SO IF ALL OF THIS IS OK WITHOUT GETTING INTO A LOT OF DIAGNOSTICS THE MOST COMMOM FAILED PART IS THE IGN MODULE MOUNTED INSIDE THE DIST CAP. WILL CAUSE NO SPARK AND NO INJ PULSE.. THE PICK UP COIL GENERATES A MAGNETIC SIGNAL THAT SIGNALS THE MODULE TO TO FIRE THE IGN COIL THAT YOU REPLACED..BUT BEFORE YOU REPLACE THE IGN MODULE, CK ALL OF THE [IGN] FUSES IN THE FUSE BOXES INSIDE AND OUT,MAKE SURE THEY ARE OK.. LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT ...TOM
