Chevrolet Repair: 1997 chevy suburban power steering issues, wheel motion, chevy suburban

Question
I have a 97 Chevy Suburban.  It has 429,000 miles on it, so needless to say it has a few quirks.  The one that is really troubling me is in the power steering system.  The variable assist system is not working properly.  It will go to full assist while driving down the interstate at 75 mph into a corner.  I already replaced the wheel motion sensor once.  The new one lasted about a month.  When it failed I just unplugged it.  In this position the system runs on full assist at all xtimes.  Not the ideal senario, but a quick fix.  My real question would be whether I can somehow remove or bypass the variable system somehow.  Maybe by removing the EVO on the pump itself, or replacing the pump with a non EVO model.  Any advice would be great.  Thanks for your time.

Answer
HI TOBY,THIS SOUNDS LIKE A BAD POWER STEERING PUMP FOR SURE.. BY REMOVING THE VARIABLE VALVE IN THE SYSTEM YOU WOULD BE OVER TAXING THE SYSTEM  AND ALSO IT MAY NOT FUNCTION CORRECT IN A PANIC MOVE.[MAY NOT STEER IS FAST AS YOU WANT IT TO ]. WHEN A P/S PUMP FAILS IT USUALLY STEERS OK GOING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN NOT ALOT OF POWER ASSIST IS NEEDED. BUT THE PUMP IS STILL ON ITS WAY OUT..JUST TO BE SURE IT IS THE PUMP AND NOT THE BOX, JUST CRACK THE HIGH PRESSURE LINE LOOSE  WHEN THE ENG IS RUNNING THERE SHOULD BE VERY LITTLE PRESSURE HERE IF THE PUMP IS GONE..IF THERE IS ALOT OF PRESSURE HERE THE PUMP IS OK..IF FOUND TO BE BAD, I WOULD ADVICE YOU TO GET A REBUILT PUMP FOR THIS YEAR TRUCK. IF MONEY IS A ISSUE GET YOURSELF A USED ONE IN THE BONE YARD. SHOULD BE MANY TO CHOOSE FROM SINCE THEY USED THESE ON MANY YEAR TRUCKS. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU,, TOM..
