QUESTION: I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado Z71-the power steering went on it today, and I can't reverse. Are these two separate problems or possibly related

ANSWER: HI SUE, YOU HAVE 2 SEPERATE ISSUES..FOR REVERSE MAKE SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS FULL OF OIL,IF LOW, THE FIRST THING THAT HAPPENS IS NO REVERSE..IF NOT LOW ON TRANS OIL,TRANS WILL NEED TO BE REBUILT,UNLESS THE SHIFT LINKAGE IS MESSED UP. DOES IT FEEL LIKE IT SHIFTS OK WITH THE GEAR LEVER ??? THE POWER STEERING, AGAIN CK FOR FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR MAKE SURE IT IS FULL,IF HOWEVER IT IS LOW IT WOULD BE MAKING ALL KINDS OF WHINNING NOISES. MAKE SURE THE BELT IS GOOD AND TIGHT,IF ALL LOOKS OK.MORE THEN LIKELY THE POWER STEERING PUMP IS BAD.. SORRY FOR THE 2 BAD CASES..I HOPE THINGS GET BETTER FOR YOU,, AND I HOPE THIS HELPED YOU..TOM..

QUESTION: to answer you, the shifting is fine-there was no notice, my daughter tried to reverse, and couldn't and then the steering went.

ANSWER: HI SUE,,WELL AGAIN,IF THE TRANS OIL IS FULL, AND GEAR SELECTOR SEEMS OK, THEN THIS IS A INTERNAL PROBLEM...A BAD SHIFT SOLENOID OR STICKY VALVE IN THE VALVE BODY WILL NOT CAUSE THIS.
AS FAR AS THE POWER STEERING GOING BAD AT THE SAME TIME,, THIS IS REALLY STRANGE !!!! THE POWER STEERING PUMP RUNS OFF OF THE ENG BELT. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRANSMISSION..     [[[ HAVE YOU CHECKED BOTH FLUID LEVELS ???]]] THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF AND THIS IS A LONG SHOT,,IF THE TRANSMISSION COOLING LINES HAVE A LEAK AND THE LEAK IS SPRAYING ON THE ENG DRIVE BELT YOU WILL LOOSE POWER STEERING AND TRANSMISSION POWER..HOWEVER,,IF THIS HAPPENED YOU WOULD HAVE OIL ALL OVER THE PLACE...[[[HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY LEAKS ???]]]

QUESTION: When you put it into reverse you get nothing. Does it click into reverse, becasue it seems to spin freely instead of locking in, You get a whinning noise. There are no oil leaks.

HI SUE AGAIN. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND ABOUT DOES IT CLICK IN REVERSE ??? ARE YOU SAYING WHEN IN REVERSE THERE IS A CLICKING SOUND ?? SHOULD NOT BE.IF IT IS WORKING CORRECT IT WILL JUST GO INTO REVERSE, POSSIBLY A CLICK SOUND WHEN THE DRIVE SHAFT LOCKS UP IN THE REAR DIFF. THIS IS NORMAL.. THE WHINNING NOISE SOUNDS LIKE A FRONT PUMP IN THE TRANSMISSION GOING BAD OR IS NOT GETTING FED ANY OIL FROM THE CONVERTOR. IN ANY CASE IT WILL HAVE TO COME OUT AND OPENED UP TO INSPECT. SORRY FOR THE BAD NEWS. STILL DOES NOT ANSWER WHY NO POWER STEERING HOWEVER...LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP YOU ANY FURTHER
