Chevrolet Repair: 86 Chev. Celebrity 2.5, pcv system, valve seals

Question
The air filter seems to be blocked with dirt and oil. What could be causing this problem? Could the PCV be bad? The car has over 100,000 miles and regular oil changes every 2500 miles. I noticed just once that when car started blue smoke came out exhaust but otherwise normal.
Another problem I had since getting the car is that occasionally it will start and when its put in drive it jumps and stalls like timing is off. It will restart easily and sometimes does it three or four times and then will go normally. I have noticed that sometimes if I give it more gas while keeping one foot on brake I can get it to go in gear without jumping or stalling.

Answer
Hi Darlene... dirty air filter could be blow by caused by the miles on the car... as rings wear they allow compression to bypass the rings putting pressure in the crankcase. the pcv system is what helps vent that pressure by allowing it to be cycled thru the intake to be burned. the blue puff you have on start up could be some wear in the valve seals. after shutting down car, oil in the head can leak past seals and lay on top of piston causing it to burn on start up... your start problem could be dirty fuel filter or low fuel pressure...change filter and have pressure checked to see if it is up to spec. if not up to spec change the pump.... hope this helps
