Chevrolet Repair: Park Brake Fuel Gage and Odometer on 1991 Chevy Silverado, vehicle speed sensor, gas gauge

Question
I recently bought a 1991 Chevy Silverado. It's an awesome truck. However, I noticed that all the gages work EXCEPT the gas gage and the odometers. I thought it might be a fuse but the other gages seem to work fine. The Parking Brake light seems to stay on even when the parking brake is off as well. Any help is appreciated! Braden

Answer
HI,

The brake light could be on because the proportioning valve has kicked over or the emergency brake pedal is down a bit.  Pull the release and pull up on the pedal to make sure its hasn't fallen down a bit because of cable adjustment.
The gas gauge may be the gauge or the sending unit and the odometer and speedometer need an input from the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission.  YOu might just have some bad switches and sensors.  If you have a DVOM and know how to use it I can help you test the VSS, proportioning valve and brake switch.
