Chevrolet Repair: Do I need a new heater core?, heater cores, drain tube

Question
Hi Howie and thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. I own a 1989 Beretta 4 cylinder. It is winter here so I have frozen water and coolant on the front and back floor of the car. Is this coming from the heater core? I have tried to keep enough coolant in it but I know I have been using more water that is why it is frozen. Thank.

Answer
Hey,

Sounds like you have two problems.  The heater cores in those years were really bad for snapping at the plastic inlet line that goes into the heatercore. The plastic line shrinks and actually fractures right on the core and leaves a big split into it.  You might want to check the weatherstripping and or the evaporator drain tube while you are at it.  IF there is coolant on the floor there is really only one place it can come from . The heater cores can be done pretty quickly too.  ITs done from the inside center and is only a matter of removing a bunch of 7mm screws.
