Chevrolet Repair: 1982 Chevy C10 5.0L 4 Barrel Surges/cuts out on highway, vacuum advance, vacuum lines

Question
QUESTION: 1982 Chevy C10, 5.0L 4 Barrel is having troubles with speeds over 40-50mph on highway. It starts great, idles great, drives great when going slowly, but when attempting to get over 50mph, it begins to "shudder" and "surge".

I've just begun to notice the problem yesterday. When on city streets, keeping under 40mph, there is no problem evident. However I have a clear fuel filter, and it seems that the fuel is not getting enough pressure to sustain the amount of gasoline needed at those higher speeds. The fuel doesn't stay full of gasoline after I have "Juiced" the throttle, it sucks all the gas down, and then the pump steadily re-fills the filter...?? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm considering putting in a new fuel pump. However before I do, I would like some feedback of anything I may be missing.

Thanks!

ANSWER: Hi,

YOu should check fuel pressure but for the cost of the pump just put one on.  You sshould also check your vacuum and centrifugal advance.  When you remove the old pump the pump drive rode that rides on the cam will slide down and you will have to push it back up. Don't panic when this happens.  To make it easier to thread the two 7/16 bolts back in rotate the motor over a bit to make sure the camshaft is on the low part of the lobe.

QUESTION: Hi Wayne,
Thanks for the quick response. As for vacuum advance, I have  replaced the stock quadrajet carb with an edelbrock 1506? 4bbl carb, and replaced the intake manifold with an Edelbrock RPM. so I don't have any vacuum lines. This was over a year ago.

Where would I find the centrifugal advance?

Answer
Hi,

So you have NO vacuum advance?  Is there a vacuum actuator on the distributor with no line on it?  The centrifugal advance is inside the distributor.  With the cap off you should be able to move the rotor back and forth and it should return on its own.  Advance should be set with an electronic gun though.
