Chevrolet Repair: 1994 Cavalier Transmission, torque converter clutch, torque converter clutch solenoid

Question
Wayne,
I have a 1994 Chevy Cavalier, 2.2  4 cyl, with air, auto-trans
engine runs fine, sporatically over the past few months it will stall when you come to a stop.
It acts exactly like a car with a clutch when you try to stop and don't push in the clutch pedal. You can put it in park, start the engine, it runs like a champ, put it in gear...it stalls.  Let it set for a few minutes, start it up..everything is fine.
I'm thinking that the converter is locking up when you drive down the road, then not releasing when you come to a stop. It is doing it more frequently and I can't drive the thing anymore
Is there a solenoid, or valve,  externally,  that controls the lock up of the convertor...something that could easily be replaced to fix this problem?
Could you please let me know if you answer this on the blog, or maybe carbon copy your answer to my e-mail.
Thanks a million,              Jeff

Answer
Hi,

The Torque converter clutch solenoid is defective.  Definitely.  The converter solenoid is inside the side cover of the transmission on the driver side.  It pays 1.7 hours and can be done it about 40 min if you have done one before.  It takes about 2.2 hours for the first one.  Be very clean ont he way in and on the way out.  The TCC plug is on the front of the trans.
