Chevrolet Repair: 1991 chevy lumina dies at stop, 1991 chevy lumina, chevy lumina

Question
i just bought a 1991 chevy lumina  v6     it runs GREAT but, after i drive it for a while when i come to a stop it does not want to idle it will die unless i keep one foot on the gas and one on the break.I took my son to the doctor (was a long distance)and i could not keep it running by giving it gas at the red light it died i put it in park and restarted it, then when i put it in drive it jumped and died. I then had someone help push it off the road walked my son to the doctor came back to my car 45 minutes later and started it,put it in drive, and drove it home (taking frequent breaks when it acted like it was going to die again)
I sure hope you can help me with this i have done without a car for 2 years!! Please keep in mind i am a woman you will be explaining this to so you might have to use moron terms lol...... thanks any advice will help

Answer
Ginny,

There is a component on the engine called an IAC valve.  (idle air control valve).  This valve controls a managed vacuum leak around the throttle plates by the computer to command idle to a specified engine RPM.  This valve can get dirty and start to stick in the bore or not seat properly.  I would suggest have the throttle body and IAC cleaned as well as having tht valve inspected and tested by a qualified technician.
