Chevrolet Repair: 2004 monte carlo, scan tool, instrument panel

i have a 2004 Monte Carlo and i was driving home tonight and the speedometer just stopped working.  the odometer and everything else on the instrument panel seems to be working just fine.  what can i do to fix this?  thanks for any help you can give me.  Pam

Hi Pam.. if you can get a scan tool, connect it and drive the car, does the speedo on the scan tool work. if it doesn't check the speedo pick up on the trans, if it does you will have to check the wiring to the speedo head. check for an open in the circut. common problem is the plug in on the pick up at the trans, they get dirty and lose contact...if wires check ok and cleaning doesn't help try replacing the pick up at the trans...hope this helps...Merry Christmas
