Chevrolet Repair: idol, chevy cavilar, throttle body injection

Question
how do you lower the idol on a 1986 chevy cavilar when you start it the idol is so high and i cant kick it down

Answer
Hi Connie,

The idle is computer controlled.  You have a throttle body injection system (like a fancy carb.).  The choke function is controlled by the engine coolant temp sensor.  The computer takes the coolant sensor input and adjusts the idle control motor accordingly.

Why is it high?  You probably have developed a vacuum leak somewhere, and are sucking too much air into the combustion mixture.  If the computer sees too much air (lean mixture it will adjust the fuel to match).  But a leak that gets around the sensors can bypass the computer's ability to control.  Look for a stuck open EGR.

It is also possible that the linkage is stuck in a position that is not quite seated.
