Chevrolet Repair: Replacing a head gasket in a 2.8 6 cyl Chev Camaro, blown head gasket, replacing a head gasket

Question
I have an opportunity to buy a nice 1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS that is immaculate except for one thing, it has a blown head gasket.  I am wondering if this is something I can do myself.  I am technically minded and have worked on cars before.  I would like to hear someone describe the process of doing this so I can see if I want to do this or not.  It's a 1989 Chev Camaro RS with a 2.8, cylinder engine.  Thanks much guys!

Answer
Easy fix.  Must remove the intake manifold.  Do both since you are in there.  Make sure it is in fact a head gasket and not a cracked head, or cracked cylinder.

Pull fuel delivery system.  Pull all cables and hoses.  Pull all accessories.  Pull radiator to protect it.  Pull valve covers.  Pull exhaust manifolds.  Pull intake.  Pull distributor if neccessary to remove intake (if not necessary, leave it in).  Pull all rocker push rods and place them in order for exact location replacement.  You will need to reset the lifters upon reinstallation.  Pull any brackets or ground straps from rear of head.  Remove the heads.

You should get reconditioned heads.  If you don't have the old ones resurfaced at a machine shop.  Reconditioned come with a valve job, new freeze plugs.  You should at this time replace the lifters.  If not, murphy's law says the lifters will tick after you get this back together.  Cheap and easy to do.  They just pull out and drop in.  Soak them in oil over night if possible.  Operate them while submerged in oil to purge air out.
