Chevrolet Repair: Chevrolet 454, winnebago brave, load tester

Question
Just purchased 1995 Winnebago Brave with Chevrolet 454 Engine.  Amp Gauge showed discharging.  I changed out
the alternator.  The battery is still not getting power to the alternator. Alterntor has checked out good. What steps do I take to check out why it is not getting power?

Answer
Well Elmer those alternators were designed to have a very low output at an idle speed. Sometimes the battery will even power you accessories until the rpms are increased and the alternator increases its output. This is a normal condition for that year. First make sure your battery grounds are good. Next, with all your accessories off run the engine above 2500 rpm...battery volts should be @ 14-16v cold and @ 13-15v at operating temp (warm). Check your power wire for corrosion or breaks. If you have an inductive amp clamp, you can place a load tester on your battery and watch the amperage at the alternator...should be within 70% of the alternators rating.
