Chevrolet Repair: timing, crank pulley, stanley stone

Question
I am building a engine, how do i set the timing for a 1989 chevrolet 5.7 v8.

Answer
Hi Stanley Stone,

First you need to get the motor started.  That means you need the distributor in the correct position.  If you can get it started, turn the motor off.  Find the basic timing mode connector and unplug it.  This is located at the distributor, or under the rug at the top of it, just behind the glove box on the passanger side of the interior of the car.  Follow the rug up from where your feet go.  Reach behind the rug and you will find wires there.  unplug the wire.  Then restart the car.  With a timing light, set the mark on the crank pulley with the timing mark on the timing cover.  You do this by loosening the bolt that holds the distributor down and turning the distrubitor until the marks line up.  Retighten the distributor and turn the car off.  Replug the timing wire in and restart.  Note that when the wire is unplugged, your check engine light will come on.

Good Luck
