Chevrolet Repair: Tune up for a 427 Chevy Long Strong Truck Motor, dipstick, oil pan

Question
How many degrees should the timing be set for a 700 rpm and just how much oil does it take when it is changed?

Answer
The timing will depend on the year, if it is a stock 427, and what size carberatour. I would start with 8 to 10 degrees and go from there on how it runs. If it is a big block it should have about 6 quarts but if it is a built motor with an aftermarket oil pan it might have more. Best thing to do if unsure is start with 5 quarts, let it sit for about 1 minute and check the dipstick. Even if it is an aftermarket oil pan with a stock dipstick the full mark should still be correct, the only difference is the capacity of the oilpan. If you want you can ask a follow up question with the information about the engine and I can give you some more tips.
