Chevrolet Repair: gas, chevrolet malibu, gas cap

my car chevrolet malibu 2004 ..keeps on telling me to check gas cap....i went and put it off and on repedadly and keeps saying the same thing and it won't start..what can it be

As strange as it may seem the gas cap does have a valve in it. If its not closing the system can't pressure up enough to get the fuel to the injectors. This is a common problem, I have delt with it enough to know that it is a real one. Go ahead and replace the cap and reset the computer. If that doesn't work let me know and we will go from there.
