Chevrolet Repair: overheating, coolant level, coolant system

Question
My 97 Camaro RS ( 6cyl ) overheats when sitting idle for a while.  If I am in stop and go traffic the car overheats faster if i am highway driving it doesn't come close to overheating almost as if just the flow of air from continous driving is cooling it off.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Answer
If your coolant level is good in the overflow and in the radiator I would say your fan isn't coming on or isn't spinning as fast as it should. If it's not coming on there are a couple of things it could be. First check to see if the fan is good by running a positive-negative jumper wire straight to it. If it comes on, it should snap to full speed in a matter of one or two seconds, any longer and the fan probably needs replaced. Second the temperature switch could be bad and it's not telling the fan to kick on. Also I beleive there is a relay in the fuse box under the hood, if the fan and switch are good then that is the only other thing it could be. Now if by chance that all of those things are good your coolant system might be obstructed somehow.
