Chevrolet Repair: AC in Chevy Venture, chevy venture, auto parts store

Question
To CJS,
Today I attempted to turn the AC on in my 1998 Chevy Venture and it didn't work.  After further inspection I noticed the clutch on the compressor wasn't spinning.  What does this means in terms of repair:  does the entire compressor needs to be replaced and could it be something simple?  Everything else is fine concerning the climate controls, I just can't get the compressor to activate and do it's job.  Thanks

Tim

Answer
Hi Tim,

This sounds like the standard LOW R-134.  You probably seeped out enough that the pressure is not high enough in the system to cycle the compressor.

You have a pressure switch in the accumulator.  This needs to see a minimal pressure to allow the compressor to function.

Quickest way to tell is to place your hand on the silver 'can' in the corner of the engine compartment.  It is probably in the passanger side corner near firewall.  Could be anywhere.  Follow the larger hose from the compressor until you find this silver can.  If this can is warm, you need a recharge.  If it is cold, you have another problem.  It could be cool, and that is not the same as cold.

You can get a recharge kit from anywhere: Walmart, Kmart, auto parts store, Target, etc.  It is easy to shoot a can or two into the system.  If you put in too much, you will have higher pressure in the system, but the A/C may feel colder.

Good luck with this.
