Chevrolet Repair: 97 silverado...wont start, relay switch, wierd things

i've been having trouble with fuelpump relay switch,put new 1 in ,worked 4 a while but got to hot-relay switch.all of suden truck shuts off & wont start tried another relay,fuelpump works..sounds like it wants to start,but wont..ps.when i turn off key it seems like it wants to start, but why?i'm thinking timing-chain,how can i tell? tyvm 4 input

Hi Rob,

Up front, sounds like your have a bad fuel pump, that is shorting out.  Or the wires to it.  This would cause the fuel pume relay to overheat.  But when you throw in the part about it wanting to start when the key is off, I start thinking maybe the starter switch (ignition switch).  If this is shorting, you could be over heating the relay, and it would do wierd things like try to start on it's own.  

Try that first.  Cheap and fairly easy fix.
