Chevrolet Repair: key wont turn, stering wheel, steering wheel

I have a 2000 impala. I put my key in the ingtion but the key wont turn. Not even to accesories. The dinging when car door is open is still working son there is power. My stering wheel seems as if it is not in a locked position.We have tried moving the stering wheel but it doesn't help the key. Any suggestions?

Hi Beth,

First thing that comes to mind is the theft device in the steering wheel.  You need to turn the steering wheel hard one way or the other, while turning the key.  If this doesn't work, you may have a problem inside the steering wheel column.  If you can't get the key to turn while pulling hard on steering wheel, this could be a big job.  

Also, could be the tumblers in the key hole.  I hate to ask, but are you sure you have the correct key?  

Try wiggling the key around while you turn it.  Also pull it out slightly or push it in hard while turning it.
