Chevrolet Repair: 1997 Blazer ignition/fuel problems, fuel problems, wire harness

Question
Here's my problem: My 1997 Blazer will no longer start with a conventional turn of the key. I have to partially turn it on, wait for the dash warning lights to come on - which doesn't always happen - and then turn it over to start it.

As I mentioned, sometimes the lights don't come on with the partial turn and sometimes they do. When the lights don't come on, the engine turns over but won't start.
When the lights come on, it starts without fail.

My soon-to-be-ex mechanic swears the vehicle needs a fuel pump and wants to charge me $800 to do it. Others tell me that it's an ignition problem.

What should I do?

Answer
Hi Bill,

It's not the fuel pump.
Sounds like the ignition switch is bad, or just out of adjustment.
Possibly a loose connection in the wire harness, or the firewall plug, where all the wires pass through the firewall.
Another thing you might do is make sure there is a good ground from the engine to the firewall.
