Chevrolet Repair: Chevy Cavalier 1996 Automatic Transmission Problem, automatic transmission problem, neutral safety switch

Question
I put my car into reverse taking of from work and when I shifted to drive it didn't go to drive. It just kept backing up. I tried changing it to D2 or Park and it didn't change at all. I turned it off and then it wouldn't turn back on since it thinks its still in reverse. So I pushed it back into the parking spot. Any idea what could be wrong with the transmission? Any easy fixes I could do? Thanks for your time in advance.

Answer
Hello Tony...Your transmission can be either a 3 or 4 speed ,but this is what we will do. Have some one sit in the car. You will open the hood and stand over the fender on the driver's side. Look straight down and you will see where the cable attaches to the transmission. You hit it right on the ''head'' when you said the vehicle is still in reverse and won't start. The neutral safety switch will prevent the vehicle from starting in any position but Park and Neutral. The Cable is probably broken or has fallen off the Manual linkage to the shifter or the transmission. Take a good look while your help moves the linkage...I think you will find the problem easy enough...Best
