Chevrolet Repair: wiper motor on 98 suburban, google search, torx screws

Question
My wiper motor seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  I have smacked it a few times and it works for a few minutes, but then goes out again.  Are these easy to replace.  My local auto parts store has one in stock for $60.  Can a novice do this himself?

Answer
Hello Wade,
That was a real common problem caused by cold solder joints on the module board.
That board is inside the plastic cover, where the wire connects to the motor housing. Yes...you can do it.
There is almost never a need to replace the motor for that problem.
Remove the three Torx screws, and take the cover off. Unplug the harness, and then pull the board out. A little wiggling may be necessary.

Then, if you are fair with a solder gun, just heat up the four or five large gonnection pins on the board, where the connector plug connects to the board.
If you use a magnifying glass, wiggle the connector housing, and you can see the little cracks in the solder where the pins come up through the board.

Do a google search on GM Wipers, and you should get some pictures.

There were even some recalls on that subject. I don't know if your Burb would still be covered or not. May be under warranty still.

But the fix is easier than messing with the dealers for the most part.

Go to www.chevytalk.com and search thru that forum for the same subject.
