Chevrolet Repair: how do i find (tdc) on a 4.3 liter, witch way, liter engine

i need to know how to find (tdc) top dead center on a 4.3 liter engine? i did the comprestion test, but when i slide the distributor in the hole the arrow is just off of the number 6.. does it have to be right on the number? if that the case witch way do i ture the gear on the dis.

To find TDC on an engine, remove the #1 spark plug.
Click the engine over until the compression starts to push your thumb off. Look at the harmonic balancer and place the "0" line on the mark.
When placing the distributor in, the rotor will actually turn clockwise as its going in. If it doesnt match up, then you will have to pull it out and turn the rotor counter-clockwise. It should fall into position close enough to the number 1 spark plug so that some adjustments can be made when your ready to set the timing.
