Motorcycle Repair: 1980 cx500 honda, guage wire, cx500 honda

Question
Chris,I'm trying to restore this bike, I am trying to get it started and I noticed I have a very weak fire to my plugs. I don't know where the fire comes from it appears to be two coils, one on each cylnder and a 14 guage wire from each coil ( under the tank) back to a solid state box under the seat.  Is this box a module?
Is this the source of my weak fire ? I have no schematic to trace the firing order. can you help me?   Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Lew.

In order to check any of the electrical system, a schematic is almost a requirement.  For that, you need the repair manual.  Get one immediately; either through the dealership or online.

As far as the firing issue.  It sounds like you are not getting enough power to the coils.  This could be indicative of either a short between power and the CDI or a short between the CDI and the ignition coils.  It could also mean that the stator is not able to produce enough power to fire the bike.
If the battery is at a full charge (and in good, servicable condition) and it will not fire up the bike, then search for a short and test the coils as per the test specs and proceedures in the repair manual.  If there are no shorts or problems with the coils, then the issue is likely to be the CDI box, but those are not known for failing that often.

Get the manual, do the tests and checks and let me know what you find.

Good luck.
