Chevrolet Repair: Whats up, question about MAF and o2, Evap system faults, tech help center, maf sensor

Question

The MAF for my s10 is $100 - sheeewwwww ...., but it might be bad, i dunno - Do you know of how or why a MAF sensor would go bad ? I've used an oiled air filter for years, and have gotten oil on the eliments, but I have cleaned it off with carb cleaner - Also, my underhood temps are pretty low (engine temps generally about 180, but I have gone to 230 from time to time, in traffic in the summer) - It is a 98 model so the MAF is 8 years old ... But would any of this cause it to actually 'go bad' ?

Well, anyways about the simulator, it just tells the computer what it wants to hear - it just peaks low and peaks high, 'lean, rich, lean, rich'-

By the way, this truck is possessed - I forgot to tell you that. Lol, Last year, a series of wird events had me pulling my hair out... i would eventually like to tear apart the 4.3 and see what caused the last problem - after the entire shop of mechanics (as well as myself and everyone I know) were utterly confused, they called the 4.3 tech help center, who also said this was impossible. I was driving, sputtered, and died. I thought "Damn MAF" - well not this time, it wouldnt start back. I rolled off the interstate and had it towed home. Nothing. Ok, here we go again, this has happened MANY times before with this truck. First, ECM, then coil, magnetic pickup, crank trigger (By now the problem is usually fixed, but not this time) - CPU codes = "Misfire" ... Duhh ... Ok, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, - No spark ! ? What ? Ok, checked for spark at the coil, yup - checked for spark at the splug - NOPE. - Timing ? The 4.3 timing is fixed, it cant be changed, so what was the deal ? I towed it to the dealership, they pondered all day, the scan tool was saying my timing was -56 degrees. How could this be ? Twisted distrbutor or shaft ? No, used a new distributor. Slipped timing or loose chain ? No, engine is super tight and super clean, well maintained ... Could the chain have jumped ? No, as tight as the chain is (No slack) it would have shattered the plastic timing gear .... Hrmmmmmm, ok, so he removes the distributor clamp, pulls it, and rotates it 3 gear teeth... In order to then twist it far enough around because it was hitting the intake .... He pulled the timing from -56 to -7 degrees, rigged a distributor clamp (Because the 4.3 clamp cannot be changed, which means the distributor did not slip) and started it up. - Started, and ran just fine. LOL, WTF ? Just for shts and giggles we used the old distributor set 3 gear teeth off, worked great too !  Ok, scratching our heads ... what ? -  So, anyways, that is how it still is. I would love to be enlightened as to how that happened, and why it still runs ? LOL ....

Question -

From time to time, I get 3 codes spit out at me, the first two are "MAF voltage high" (& Also "MAF Voltage Low, strange that it is 'either-or') and the last code is "Evap fault"-

Answer
Thankyou for getting back to me on the simulator.
As far as timing, sounds like an old aquaintance was playing a trick on you and switched your wires around.
Did you say you were driving this truck and then it went out, or did you park it somewhere somebody where someone could get to the wires to switch them around?
