Chevrolet Repair: 1989 Corsica Serp Belt Removal, serp belt, tensioner pulley

Question
Hello. I am trying to replace an alternator on an 1989 Corsica.
However, I am having problems removing the Serp Belt. I was
told by a gentleman that works at the local AutoZone to grab a
big breaker bar and pry on the tensioner pulley that way.
Unfortunately the tensioner isn't moving. I am curious if you
have any suggestions for me on how to remove the Serp Belt,
and/or on getting the tensioner pulley to move. I appreciate
your help.

Thank you,
Jenniy

Answer
There is a square insert on the tensioner pulley. Use an extension (1/2" or 3/8") in this square.
If there is no square and you decide to use a pry bar, try loosening the center nut/bolt 1/2 to 1 full turn but no more. Then, without using leverage against the alternator or anything else breakable, use a pry bar.
Remember, safety first with eye protection and gloves!
There may be a few more bolts that need to be loosened but not removed.
