Chevrolet Repair: 1999 ASTRO REAR END HUM, costly expense, time ed

Question
Looking to buy a 99 astro cargo van with 200,000 miles on it. Runs strong but has a loud hum coming from the rear and it doesn't sound like tires. Is this a costly expense. I'm thinking maybe bearings. Is this a known issue because I have heard of this before. Any input would be appreciated. I am a pretty good back yard mechanic, not sure if this is something to tackle myself or not. What could the costs be? Thanks Mark for your time. Ed

Answer
Hi Ed, Yes it sounds like the bearings in the rear end. This is not a big job if you have the tools, you need quite a few bearing installers. Cost at a dealer around 800 dollars, I'm sure a good shop would do it for 500 to 600.

Hope this helps
